About CIO’s Immigration Services
CIO offers immigration services as a part of our Strategies and Tactics for Refugee and Immigrant Democratic Engagement (STRIDE) Program, a project designed to move emerging immigrant and refugee communities along a continuum of democratic participation—from citizenship through naturalization to leadership development and community organizing.
Why Does a Social Justice Organization Offer Immigration Services?
For immigrants and refugees, active participation in civic affairs often begins with a change in immigration status. At present, there are over 100,000 legal permanent residents eligible for naturalization in Oregon who have not yet become U.S. citizens and many others who are qualified to apply for legal permanent residence. However, immigrants and refugees have few resources to obtain low-cost legal services and the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently increased its application fees (naturalization fees went up 66% from $400 to $675, and green card application fees increased 42% from $260 to $370). STRIDE creates an affordable bridge for low-income immigrants and refugees, who are most likely to be civically disenfranchised, to become legal permanent residents and citizens and activate their status and new awareness immediately through structured activities at CIO.
From Service to Organizing
The attainment of citizenship through naturalization is a door into the U.S. society, but active participation takes more than just a naturalization certificate. The STRIDE Program combines the provision of affordable legal services with civic engagement education, community organizing trainings, and cross cultural community building workshops, assisting immigrants and refugees in making the transition from social service recipients to empowered and engaged members of the community.
