PORTLAND, OR—For nearly nine months, a cross-cultural
group of immigrant and refugee leaders have been meeting to
organize for a more inclusive Portland. On Wednesday, October
18th at 6:30 PM, Portland's City Council will hear a resolution
affirming its commitment to the inclusion of immigrants and
refugees in civic and public life—a resolution born of this
unique collaboration.
The resolution calls for the creation of a task force charged
with investigating barriers to immigrant and refugee inclusion
in civic life and proposing workable solutions for the City
of Portland. It also takes a progressive position on federal
immigration reform, acknowledging the need for a realistic
and comprehensive approach that provides a path to citizenship,
addresses the immigration backlog to unify families, and provides
a safe, legal and orderly avenue for migrant workers to enter
the U.S. and benefit from worker protections.
Bridgetown Voices applauds this effort to expand democracy
at a time when immigrants and refugees are being attacked
in election campaigns and their voices are marginalized in
state and national policy debates.
This resolution will ensure that new communities have a voice
inside City Hall for years to come. Bridgetown Voices invites
immigrant and refugee groups, religious leaders, business
leaders and others to join them on October 18, when Portland
City Council hears this landmark resolution.

collaboration empowering immigrants and refugees throughout
the Portland Tri-County region to develop a unified voice,
advocate for their rights, and create an environment in which
they are recognized and supported as valued residents of our

TRANSLATION ASSISTANCE NEEDED
On Wednesday, October 18th at 6:30 PM, Portland's
City Council will hear a resolution protecting the rights
and liberties of immigrants and refugees. We need assistance
translating this resolution into as many languages as possible,
and also assistance with interpreting at the event. If you
have translation skills, please consider using these skills
to support an initiative by our municipal government and human
dignity groups to better involve newcomers in Portland civic
affairs and public life.

PORTLAND, OREGON — Después de casi 9 meses
de pláticas sostenidas por un grupo de líderes
en representación de la pluralidad de inmigrantes y
refugiados en la ciudad de Portland; a fin de lograr una mayor
inclusión en ciudad de Portland; este miércoles,
18 de octubre a las 6:30 de la tarde, el Ayuntamiento de Portland
oirá una resolución nacida de esta colaboración
sin precedentes que afirma su compromiso a la inclusión
de inmigrantes y refugiados en la vida cívica y pública
de esta ciudad.
La resolución urge a la creación de un equipo
de trabajo con el compromiso de investigar cuáles son
las barreras que encuentra el inmigrante y el refugiado para
su inclusión en la vida cívica y proponer soluciones
viables para la Ciudad de Portland. También toma una
posición progresiva en cuanto a reformas de inmigración
federal, reconociendo la necesidad de un acercamiento realista
y completo que provea un camino hacia la ciudadanía,
resuelva el rezago en la inmigración por unificación
familiar, y provea una avenida segura, legal y ordenada para
la entrada de trabajadores migratorios en los Estados Unidos
bajo la protección del derecho laboral.
El Proyecto Bridgetown Voices (“Voces de la Ciudad de los
Puentes”) aplaude este esfuerzo para ampliar la democracia
en un momento en el que los inmigrantes y los refugiados son
atacados en campañas electorales y en el que se margina
sus voces en el debate político tanto a nivel estatal
como nacional. Esta resolución asegurará que
las nuevas comunidades tengan una voz dentro del Ayuntamiento
en los años venideros.
El proyecto “Bridgetown Voices (“Voces de la Ciudad de los
Puentes”) - invita a grupos de inmigrantes y refugiados, líderes
religiosos, de los negocios y otros a unirse con ellos éste
día 18 de octubre para la audiencia en la cual el Ayuntamiento
de Portland escuchará esta singular resolución.
ACERCA DEL PROYECTO BRIDGETOWN VOICES (“Voces de
la Ciudad de los Puentes”):
El Proyecto Bridgetown Voices, (“Voces de la Ciudad de los
Puentes”) es el resultado de la colaboración de inmigrantes
y refugiados a nivel local a fin de otorgar poder a los inmigrantes
y refugiados que viven en la región compuesta por los
tres condados de Portland para el desarrollo de una voz unificada,
que abogue por sus derechos, y por la creación de un
ambiente en el cual sean reconocidos como valiosos residentes
de nuestra ciudad.
