Venezuela: Rebirth of a Nation
Film and Discussion with Venezuelan Panelists
TUESDAY, MAY 31, 2005

Tuesday May 31, 2005
7:30 PM
Smith Center at the Multicultural Center
(SW Broadway and Montgomery)
Portland State University
Featuring John Olmsted, Adjunct instructor in Psychology,
Portland State
University.
John recently went to Venezuela to witness what he calls
"a rebirth of a
nation." He participated in the World Solidarity Conference
with the
Bolivarian revolutionaries in Venezuela. The conference marked
the third
anniversary of the attempted coup against the democratically
elected
government of Hugo Chavez. On May 31, John will be sharing
with local
Portlanders his first hand experience in Venezuela.
Since Hugo Chavez was elected in 1998, the poor Venezuelans
have something
that they never dreamed of, they can now go to a designated
home in the
neighborhood to pick up a hot meal every day. The elderly
have monthly
pensions that allow them to live with dignity. Young people
can take
advantage of greatly expanded free college programs. And with
13,000 Cuban
doctors spread throughout the country and reaching over half
the population,
the poor now have their own family doctors on call 24-hours
a day—doctors who
even make house calls. This heath care, including medicine,
is all free. In
addition, the Venezuelan government is providing opportunities
for the poor
in the form of land, credit, housing, education, health and
social security,
in a macroeconomic environment of external stability and fiscal
sustainability.
