IVORY COAST UPDATE
Featuring Evelyne Ello-Hart
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 21
7:00 PM, PSU Multicultural Center
In late 2004, the world turned its attention to Cote d’Ivoire,
where sudden pro-government confrontations with French troops
wounded hundreds and left many dead. Find out what happened--and
what's happening now--when local Cote d’Ivoire transplant
Evelyne Ello-Hart speaks on February 21st.
Evelyne Ello-Hart, from Cote d’Ivoire, presently works at
Lutheran Community Services NW as the African Women’s Coalition
Coordinator. She has been in the US since 2002. Prior to coming
to Portland, she lived and worked in Rome, Italy, for five
years. Her educational background is in journalism and social
communication.
In her work with AWC, she is committed to building a strong
African women’s organization that will act as a voice for
refugee and immigrant women. The AWC is a new community-based
organization that focuses on helping African women reach their
highest potential through leadership development, advocacy
and educational opportunities.
Evelyne has a longstanding interest in African politics, particularly
in regard to her own country where there has been a violent
transition from one-party politics to a more democratic multiple-party
system.
As a student activist at home, she organized non-violent political
protests against the government of Felix Houphouet Boigny.
Later, as a journalist, she followed the emergence of the
new government under the leadership of Gbagbo Laurent. In
the US, she continues to follow Cote d’Ivoire’s current situation
with great concern, particularly as she interacts with recently
arrived refugees from Liberia who lived in Cote d’Ivoire for
many years in refugee camps who tell her about the situation
in her country.
