This forum will address the unique challenges that face
immigrant students in the public education system. How does
the current educational system provide for non-English speakers
and immigrants, and how can this be improved? What prejudices
do immigrant students encounter in their peers and school
officials? How are newly-arrived immigrant students placed
in our educational system when they come from very different
systems, or have had little formal education? How can misunderstandings
due to cultural differences be avoided? What methods are available
to help overcome the cultural and language barriers that hinder
communication between schools and parents? The forum will
explore strategies for improvement of the system to push all
students towards success and to help the immigrants integrate
more quickly.
