MULTNOMAH COUNTY RESOLUTION

On December 9, 2004 -- with a vote of 4-1 -- the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution expressing commitment to protect our civil rights. Similar in many ways to resolutions that have been passed by the City of Portland and by 351 other local and state governments to date, this resolution went further in addressing the matter of discrimination and harassment in addition to the matter of civil rights.

In response to members of the Board of Commissioners—who asked for expressions of public support—the Center for Intercultural Organizing collected organizational endorsements from targeted immigrant and refugee communities, reports of personal experiences, and encouraged community attendance at the December 9, 2004 meeting, at which members of the Board of Commissioners passed the resolution. The Center also published a report to the Commissioners.
