THE FUTURE OF HAITI
Featuring a Film and
Discussion
With Brian Concannon, Jr., the Attorney for
Former Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide SATURDAY, MAY 15, 2004
1:00 to 3:00 PM
FILM: POTE MAK SONJE: THE RABOTEAU TRIAL
(Whoever Bears the Scar Remembers)
This film chronicles the courageous and persistent fight to obtain justice of the victims of the 1994 Raboteau Massacre in Haiti. The 2000 Raboteau Trial has been hailed as one of the most significant human rights trials in the Western Hemisphere. This film is about the victims’ fight for justice, set within the broader context of the struggle of Haiti’s poor majority for freedom and self-determination, against powerful forces there and abroad.
FORUM FEATURING BRIAN CONCANNON, JR.
“The U.S. in Haiti: Democratic Rule, Regime Change, and Human Rights”
Human rights lawyer and activist, Brian Concannon, Jr., an ex-corporate attorney from Boston, who has led this fight for justice, will make a presentation following the movie. He has co-managed the Bureau des Avocats Internationaux in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, since 1996, prosecuting human rights cases, mostly from Haiti’s 1991-1994 de-facto military dictatorship. After six weeks of trial in the Raboteau case, the jury convicted 53 defendants, including the de-facto dictatorship’s top military and paramilitary leaders, for the massacre of pro-democracy supporters. Come hear his eye-opening report about what has recently transpired in Haiti—the U.S. led coup against President Aristide, Haiti’s democratically elected leader, and the ensuing developments in which our government continues to be involved.
