the Center Representatives Attend Highlander Center
Training
On Wednesday, April 9, representatives of the Community Language and Culture Bank had the pleasure of attending a workshop by Suzanne Pharr, Director or the historic
Highlander Center. Organizing for Public
Education brought Pharr to Washington State to discuss how
educators and organizers might connect with diverse communities in
meaningful ways.
"We were thrilled to participate in this conference,"
said Kayse Jama, founder of the Community Language and Culture Bank.
"We offer cultural sensitivity trainings at the Center, and Pharr's
workshop will enable us to be more effective educators and social
change agents."
Topics covered in the workshop included:
- Communities of color as true partners in organizing for public education
- Listening to communities of color
- Positive ways to approach communities of color
- Developing cultural competency
Since 1932, Highlander has been an educational center for social change. Leaders of the labor, civil rights and environment movements have attended workshops at Highlander. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ralph Abernathy, Ella Baker, Julian Bond, Stokely Carmichael, Rosa
Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt and Pete Seeger are among the thousands who have passed through Highlander, drawing inspiration and sharing their strength. Highlander's work continues today promoting economic justice and democratic participation nationally and internationally.
