the Center Collaborates with PSU on Immigrant/Refugee Policy Class

This fall,  the Community Language and Culture Bank is once again partnering with Portland State University  to provide an intercultural experience for graduating seniors. "Connecting with Diverse Populations," will offer students a unique opportunity to practice civic engagement as they learn about public policies affecting immigrants and refugees. The class will study case examples of asylees to understand the needs of displaced people and U.S. policies to assist them. Students will work in teams to research local policies and interact with media, nonprofit organizations, and government officials.

This collaboration is an example of PSU’s Senior Capstone Program. These community-based learning courses are designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply, in a team context, what they have learned in their majors and in their other University Studies courses to a real challenge emanating from the metropolitan community.

The Capstone's purpose is to further enhance student learning while cultivating crucial life abilities that are important both academically and professionally; establishing connections within the larger community, developing strategies for analyzing and addressing problems, and working with others trained in fields different from one's own.
