the Center Collaborates with PSU on Refugee Youth Project

This summer, the Community Language and Culture Bank is partnering with PSU to provide an intercultural experience for graduating seniors. Through classroom seminars, students will learn about immigration issues, Somali history and culture, and problems faced by refugee children. Then, the Center will provide a first-hand experience with Somali children, where students will tutor them in an intensive program two days per week.

This collaboration is an example of PSU’s Senior Capstone Program. These community-based learning courses are designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply, in a team context, what they have learned in their majors and in their other University Studies courses to a real challenge emanating from the metropolitan community.

The Capstone's purpose is to further enhance student learning while cultivating crucial life abilities that are important both academically and professionally; establishing connections within the larger community, developing strategies for analyzing and addressing problems, and working with others trained in fields different from one's own.
