WAR STORIES:
Portland Refugees on Life Before, During, and After Conflict

In the fervor of war, many voices have risen to the fore. Voices
of protest emerged and chants of “support our troops” answered.
But in our community, there are still other voices. Men, women,
and children who have experienced war—first hand. And it is
why they are here, in America.
On Saturday, April 5, some of these brave refugees will speak
about their experiences. Many risk interrogation or fear persecution
by their neighbors or police. It is a frightening time for many
of our citizens, but for refugees, it can be reminiscent of
their lives before coming to this country. Not knowing who to
trust and fearing for their safety, many have chosen to be silent.
Recent American events—from September 11 to the bombing of Iraq—serve
to heighten fear in these communities. Who will be the next
target or “suspected terrorist?”
Join the Community Language and Culture Bank and hear how living
in a city under fire is no abstraction. Listen to the stories
of our most vulnerable community members, and hear the whispers
that get lost among so many outspoken voices.
