The Center for Intercultural Organizing (CIO) is a community-based organization driven by our members. Who are these members? They are people like you!

As a member-run organization, CIO is composed of and powered by ordinary folks. CIO members come from diverse cultural, ethnic, economic, and religious backgrounds. They are immigrants, refugees, U.S.-born citizens, workers, students, asylees, moms, dads, grandparents and, most importantly, allies in the struggle for social justice. Our members share a common belief in a multi-racial, multicultural democracy inclusive of all—and the passion to put their beliefs into action.

We are excited to invite you to actively engage in the Center’s work by becoming a member. CIO members have the opportunity to serve on our planning committees, organize and attend events, run our educational programs, and steer the path to building a unified voice for the immigrant and refugee populations of Portland and beyond.

Challenges facing immigrant communities are real. The number of organized hate groups is increasing and anti-immigrant public sentiment is rising. Through your membership in CIO, you are becoming part of a growing tide of compassionate individuals dedicated to seeing that “liberty and justice for all” is evenly applied to peoples of all races, religions, countries of origin and backgrounds. We are a vehicle for social justice and real change, welcome aboard!

MEMBERSHIP DUES

There are two ways to build community power and make change: organized people and organized money. CIO charges membership dues so that we can pool our resources as well as our “people power” in order to become a strong organization able to make a difference in the lives of immigrants and refugees.

Membership dues are sliding-scale, beginning at $5 per month. We encourage our members to select a dues amount that works for their budget. Dues can be paid monthly, quarterly or annually. For individuals who cannot afford to pay the $5 monthly minimum, we have a labor-equity program that allows members to contribute 6 hours of volunteer work during the course of a year instead of paying dues. At the Center for Intercultural Organizing, we welcome all people, regardless of their income level.

BECOME AN ACTIVE MEMBER

We understand that people have busy lives. Because CIO relies upon its membership to create and implement all of our programs and strategies for change, we have two categories of membership: active members and supporting members.

Active members should:

  • Lead or participate in the organization’s programs, civic engagement work, education projects, forums, or community organizing.
  • Assist with fundraising by helping to plan and/or participate in the fundraising activities of the Center.
  • Develop skills and analysis through participating in at least four of the Center’s leadership development or political education trainings throughout the year and/or coming to at least four Center events.

If your time does not allow you to be an active member, we still appreciate your support! Individuals who are unable to participate in the Center’s activities as active members are considered supporting members.

Join the Center for Intercultural Organizing today and help to make real change.
